I couldn’t pick up the phone fast enough. I saw it as a sign. I told them yes the instant I could answer the lady’s question of whether or not I would be attending.

But tonight, Wyatt took that break-in as a sign, a sign that life is short and he didn’t want to remain just friends with me.

I shove the letter into the nearest drawer, vowing to deal with it when the time is right, and instead bask in this moment of sleeping next to my best friend while knowing we aren’t just friends anymore.

It was the first thing I’d wanted in my life, even back before I wanted a chance to develop my photography skills. So I’m going to take it—and I’m going to immerse myself in it without remorse, regret, or unrequited longing tainting it this time.

“You thirsty?” I hand the glass of water to Wyatt once I make it back to my room.

“Thanks.” He gulps down half of it and then takes a seat on my bed.

I set the glass on my nightstand and then situate myself under the covers with him, my back to his front. His hand rests on my hip as he pulls me into him.

His hard physique presses against my soft curves, and I melt, loving how his touch sends bolts of lightning shooting across my skin. I can feel the heat coming off of him, which isn’t helping my body relax, but I won’t dare complain. I’ve waited too long for this.

“You comfortable?” he whispers in my ear, biting softly on the lobe, scattering goosebumps all over my skin.

“Yes. You?”

“I’m exactly where I want to be,” he says in return, pressing his hand into my bare stomach where it’s exposed between my shirt and shorts and breathing in deeply before releasing his hot breath on my neck. I’ve never felt more at home than I do in this moment.

“Me, too, Wyatt. Me, too.”
